European Right-Wing Setting the Political Narrative, Study Reveals
Mainstream political parties are increasingly enabling the radical right to set the public discourse, according to a recent study conducted in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Researchers discovered that this trend has inadvertently helped radical groups by validating their viewpoints and spreading them more widely.
Study Drawing from Two Decades of News Reporting
The findings, published in the academic journal on political studies, utilized an automated text analysis of over 520,000 articles from a half-dozen German newspapers.
Berlin-based scholars noted that as the far right moved from fringe issues in the 1990s era to core themes like assimilation and migration, mainstream parties progressively adapted their messaging in response.
This adaptation amplified the dissemination of these ideas and indicated to the electorate that such stances were acceptable.
Implications for Democracy
"Political communication by mainstream political groups is crucial in the voting performance of the far right," stated a expert in political behavior involved in the study.
"This element has been underestimated," she noted.
The effect was evident even when mainstream groups were condemning the radical faction. "They still receive focus," the researcher commented. "Our core argument is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this attention is key."
Normalisation Effect Throughout Europe
While the research was centered around the German context, this mainstreaming phenomenon is probable to apply to nations throughout the European continent.
"This is frequently observed in European media," explained another researcher. "Radical groups says something and everyone starts talking about it for several days."
"Even if you're countering it, you're echoing it," he stated.
Toughening of Political Rhetoric
At times, political figures have also toughened their discourse to align with that of the radical right.
In a recent discussion, a then national leader called for large-scale expulsions and urged them to happen "more often and faster."
Comparable examples can be observed throughout Europe, as politicians from nations including the UK to France embrace the language of the far right, especially on migration.
This has created an feedback loop that was unthinkable a ten years prior.
Central Issue: Who Dictates the Agenda?
"{If you're a centrist party and you are discussing societal topics – immigration, integration – in a way that is dictated by the rhythm of the radical right, that's the essence of narrative control," explained a researcher.
Some parties have gone one step further, seeking to copy the strict platform of the radical right, even as research suggests that doing so leads the electorate to vote for the radical faction.
Gradual Influence and Public Perception
The scope of information gathered revealed that the impact of far-right parties had been gradual and had increased with the passage of time.
"Voter awareness doesn't change from day to day," stated a researcher. "However, when you hear this pessimistic narrative around migration frequently, and it is being spread not only by radical groups but also, for example, by mainstream parties, then of course this storyline gains more traction."
Need for Mainstream Groups to Carve Out Their Distinct Narratives
The study emphasized the necessity for established political parties to develop their distinct narratives, particularly on subjects such as immigration and assimilation, instead of continuously following the far right.
"It resembles a choreography," explained one author. "When the leader is radical and you're responding to them, you lose the ability to choose which tune should be heard."
